It’s a tradition that many Michiganders share; going “Up North”, as close or far as your family travels, to experience the wonders of our lakes is just a part of life. We know the mitten like the back of our left hands but have we seen it all???
If you haven’t been we highly recommend. Go in summer, go in winter, just go! And go often. Petoskey is Pure Michigan at it’s finest. And while you are there, here’s a list of our favorite eats:
1. American Spoon — Family owned and operated since 1982, they have the best gelato outside of Italy. Try the Burnt Caramel, you’ll thank us! And go in hungry enough to sample all of their goodies, cakes, crumbles, and preserves because everything is out for tasting.

2. Chandler’s — This 2014 Travelers’ Choice Winner is the preferred destination of locals and tourists. If you go in Winter (and we highly recommend you do) sit at the bar and have Christian make you his signature coffee drink– you won’t be disappointed, it is the most involved drink we have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Also, the Lentil soup is a MUST… crushed lentils, cumin, and goat cheese crostini. Its’s worth all $10.00. And the SUSHI… so good you would swear you’re in San Fran…

3. City Park Grill — this scratch kitchen has the best, most fresh, perfectly prepared white fish– EVER!! Nuff said 🙂

Most people get scammed when shopping for the high-end, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods… Even if the USDA has changed regulations about the use of the marketing term “grass-fed” in 2007 to make sure it really means the cattle are 100% grass-fed for their entire life… turns out that the whole regulatory program is applied on a voluntary basis. Believe it or not, this is the reality of most of the pricey foods you are buying. In the United States, Ranchers and Distributors can get away with using marketing and branding catch phrases to establish claims and promote false expectations. The regulations are not strict and the standards are often vague– thus the consumer is tricked!!!
Know your farmer, know the people behind the product you buy, and look for smaller producers to ensure higher quality and standards. It is not easy, nor is it cheap, to do things the right way so if you are willing to pay a premium people– make sure you’re getting what you want!

Have you been to a pop-up dinner yet? Guns + Butter, the underground dining experience, has captured a cult
following and they’re not likely to have reservations anytime soon! Chef Craig utilizes only ingredients
found within 100miles of Detroit and Ann Arbor and the culinary results are euphoric. In a recent interview
with CBS Detroit Craig says:
“It’s exciting to cook for such a variety of guests,” said Leickfelt. “Sometimes people who would not
normally sit next to one another, they are, and it’s all because of food.”
