Why It’s Important to REALLY Know Your Food

When you read “Free-range”, “Cage-free” or “Pasture-raised” on your egg carton, you probably picture this chicken, hanging out in the sun…The truth is that the eggs you buy probably come from these guys… Thanks to a friend we came across this excellent article written by Nick “The Nutrition Nerd” Pineault, thanks Joe!

Thanks to a friend we came across this excellent article written by Nick “The Nutrition Nerd” Pineault,
thanks Joe!

Nick writes,
Most people get scammed when shopping for the high-end, unprocessed, nutrient-dense foods… Even if the USDA has changed regulations about the use of the marketing term “grass-fed” in 2007 to make sure it really means the cattle are 100% grass-fed for their entire life… turns out that the whole regulatory program is applied on a voluntary basis. Believe it or not, this is the reality of most of the pricey foods you are buying. In the United States,  Ranchers and Distributors can get away with using marketing and branding catch phrases to establish claims and promote false expectations. The regulations are not strict and the standards are often vague– thus the consumer is tricked!!!

Know your farmer, know the people behind the product you buy, and look for smaller producers to ensure higher quality and standards. It is not easy, nor is it cheap, to do things the right way so if you are willing to pay a premium people– make sure you’re getting what you want!

On the Monty’s Farm we make sure that our animals receive the best care in order to ensure the best quality
product. It is our belief that each animal deserves a kindness and dignity from birth and throughout its
lifecycle. A better life, sustainable practices, and free range farming, all equate to better beef for you
and your family.

“a humanely raised animal has been allowed to engage in natural behaviors, has had sufficient space,
shelter and gentle handling to limit stress, and eats a healthful diet without added antibiotics or
hormones.”
